Harlan Coben, Gone For Good
On the day of his mother’s funerals, Will Klein recalls the tragedy that shocked his quiet New Jersey suburban neighborhood and torn his own family apart eleven years ago: his brother Ken was accused of raping and strangling Julie Miller, Will’s first love, and then disappeared. No one has seen him ever since. Will has always believed, in spite of all the evidence, that Ken was not guilty, and that he’s been long dead…
On that day however, when Will and his girlfriend Sheila go through some photographs that belonged to Will’s mother, Will finds a recent picture of Ken, hidden behind another picture. As Will wants to discuss the possibility of Ken being alive with his father and sister, he meets with their reluctance to unearth a very painful past.
Soon, a series of events is set in motion that turns Will’s life around: his girlfriend, Sheila, disappears after leaving a note saying "love you always" and the FBI starts asking questions about her. Pulled between ghosts from the past and concerns for his girlfriend and "soulmate", Will has to find the perilous way to a truth, which, as his best friend yoga guru "Squares" puts it, he might not like…
Gone for Good is the third novel I have read by Harlan Coben and my favorite so far. The story is a real roller-coaster ride, and the many twists-and-turns don’t threaten credibility as much as in his other novels. The plot is intricate and gripping, the characters complex and interesting and the ending pretty satisfying, tying up all loose ends. A very good thriller!
